Review – The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Synopsis:
Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school…again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

My Review:
4 out of 5 stars

I’ll be honest and admit that I only chose to read this series as part of a reading challenge that I’m taking part in.  I needed a series to read, and since my husband and son have both read and loved these books, I decided to go with the Percy Jackson series.  I have absolutely no knowledge about mythology and don’t even really have an interest in it.  It’s never appealed to me.  But, wow!  This book really sucked me in.

The first few chapters moved a little slow and I was almost ready to give up on the book, but my husband and son both urged me to continue.  I’m so glad that they did, because that next chapter…wow!  That’s when everything really started to happen and the action didn’t stop until the very end.  Because I don’t really know much about mythology it was a little hard keeping track of all of the gods and their relationships and everything, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book.

I was flipping pages like crazy trying to find out what would happen next.  I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next book and am very glad I chose to read this series.
